Dubai’s VDX becomes world’s first certified purpose-built commercial vertiport
Milestone clears path for future electric air taxi operations
DUBAI – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has marked a major milestone in the future of urban aviation after the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) certified the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The facility, officially registered as VDX, is expected to become the first operational hub in Dubai’s upcoming Air Taxi network.
The achievement places the UAE at the forefront of Advanced Air Mobility while laying the regulatory foundations for commercial electric air taxi services.
Historic milestone
Developed by Skyports Infrastructure in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), VDX is the first of four planned vertiports that will form Dubai’s future Air Taxi network. The remaining three facilities are currently under development as part of the wider project to introduce next-generation urban transport across the emirate.
The certification followed an extensive assessment by the GCAA, covering the vertiport’s infrastructure, physical characteristics, operational procedures, safety management systems, emergency preparedness and compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
The approval represents the world's first regulatory certification for a purpose-built commercial vertiport, establishing an international benchmark for the safe deployment of eVTOL aircraft operations.
Safety first
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, described the certification as a historic achievement for both the UAE and the aviation industry.
He said the milestone reflected the country's leadership vision, the maturity of its regulatory framework and its ability to foster innovation without compromising the highest standards of aviation safety. According to Al Suwaidi, the UAE is not simply preparing for the future of aviation but actively shaping it while setting new global standards for Advanced Air Mobility.
Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director General of the GCAA’s Aviation Safety Affairs Sector, said the approval extended well beyond certifying a new aviation facility. He noted that it demonstrated the UAE's capability to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for emerging aviation technologies through rigorous certification processes, proactive regulation and close collaboration with industry partners.
Future network
Skyports Infrastructure Chief Executive Officer Duncan Walker said the certification marked a defining moment for Advanced Air Mobility by proving that the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory systems required for commercial eVTOL services are now in place.
He added that with VDX certified and construction of the wider Dubai Air Taxi network progressing rapidly, commercial operations have moved a significant step closer, opening the door to a new era of safe, efficient and sustainable urban transport.
The four-storey VDX facility covers around 3,100 square metres and has been designed with two dedicated take-off and landing areas, rapid charging infrastructure for electric aircraft and passenger handling facilities capable of supporting high traffic volumes. Once commercial services begin, the vertiport is expected to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually.
The certification supports the UAE’s long-term development strategies, including We the UAE 2031 and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, by promoting innovation, encouraging investment, supporting economic diversification and advancing sustainable mobility. The milestone also highlights the close cooperation between the GCAA, Dubai’s RTA, Skyports Infrastructure and other strategic partners working to develop Dubai’s future Air Taxi ecosystem.
